Easy-as to change $NZ in Bali. Just make sure your currency is in mint condition, (ensure there are no rips, markings, wear and tear). I always take $100 notes plus a $20 to change at the airport upon arrival for immediate expenses until I can get to a Kodak or other trusted moneychanger. The rates at the airport will be lower than Kodak, for example, but still hugely better than any rate you will get pre-departure from NZ.
I prefer to pay VOA with American $'s as it is more straightforward than having to do "mental gymnastics" with regard exchange rates and potential for "ripoff" immediately upon arrival.
When are you travelling 1sttime? I'm jealous as I am not yet sure whether I will get there for my Bali-fix this year.
