Dear K,
I thought that if you declared spices, then they would allow me to bring them in. However last trip they took away my saffron and curry powders, because the packaging did not list what they contained. So I would ensure that any packaging is clearly labelled.
The trip before, I did bring in vanilla pods and they let me keep them, no writing on packaging - so maybe it's up to the officer's discretion??!!
Avoid banana leaf or water hyacinth - some photo albums and placemats are made of these and you can't bring them in.
Check anything wooden for tiny holes, which could indicate borers - just have a close look at them in Bali. We always shop in Geneva and you have to be careful to pick wooden products.
If you buy cushions, make sure they are stuffed with cotton or dacron and not kapok - this is also not allowed - but I just bring back covers and stuff them myself at home with foam to avoid that being a problem.
Happy shopping and enjoy your first trip!
