You said "close handy" & the only time I have ever heard that phrase (until reading it now) was on a bus into Perth City from Willetton long ago when the Mum & middle-aged daughter behind me used it several times in the same way.
It seemed to me a great phrase, very apt in the circumstances you mention & it stuck in my mind. Any idea of it's origin? Is it a country WA term? (I'm from Sydney). Off topic I know, but I'm most interested.
