I stayed in Amed a few years ago at the Blue Moon Villas (http://www.bluemoonvilla.com/) a couple of years ago. It is really off the beaten track and the biggest worry about shopping is buying fish off the locals. This was the only place where I was not asked for transport/shopping once while I stayed there. There is also a good range of other hotels/villas in the area.
There is still some life there (one wartel - slow internet access), diving and some restaurants for the hotels. Just remember, this place really is RURAL for Bali.
