How far ahead?

Never been to Bali before and am thinking of booking directly with hotel in Legian - how far ahead should you book? Do you get a better deal if you leave it till the last minute? What about airfares? Am looking at mid priced hotel for 2 couples and 2 12 year olds - any suggestions? I appreciate any information - you people seem to know your way around!
