Im not an expert on this but this is what I did BEFORE I got a work permit.(KITAS)

He should enter the country on a Sosial budaya visa. You CANNOT work on this visa.

Whoever is sponsoring your son, needs to write a letter on a company letterhead. Just saying that he is going to stay with the family during his time in Indonesia.

I organised this visa while I was stopped over in Singapore. It was done in one day. they put a sticker in your passport and usually it states how long you are permitted to stay and the name of the "company" that sponsors you.

My friend used her company letterhead and on the visa sticker it stated her company as the sponsor... the company didnt even know about it (she works at a 5 star hotel in Jkt)... hehehe... I also had to submit a photocopy of my friends KTP (Indonesian ID card)

I was able to renew this visa serval times for a cost of 50,000 rupiah each time. (I live in Jakarta so the renewal price will be different from Bali)

This was 3 years ago now.. But that is generally how it goes :)

You should be able to apply for this visa somewhere in Australia at the Indo consulate. Give them a call.
