We hire a car while in bali and drive ourselves. We find that once you are outside of the tourist areas it is reasonably Ok but there are some roadrules that you should follow unless you want some fines. You need to where fitted seatbelts, most cars have them only in the front. When you stop at lights your tyres must be behind the white line or you may get fined, there are police shelters at most large intersections and lights, and they are watching! Some roads are one way for cars but motor bikes can go each way, so don't be fooled if you see bikes going both ways even though there is a sign with a cross saying no entry. You should honk the horn when you are overtaking a car or bike (and it seems whenever you are going to do something silly!). The speed is very slow and when you reach 60kms you feel like you are going very fast.
We have travelled up to Lovina, which is where the swimming with dolphins is, in a day but it is a long drive and probably much better if you have a car to stay overnight, you can stay at the same place that has the dolphins.
We pay 150,000rp a day for the car hire and the price of petrol in january was around 5,000rp a litre.
