Loubee,
From my stand point of view, if someone intended to raise living standard of a given society, in this case is Bali, they should stimulate the growth of local economy by bringing $$ to the region, for examples:buying local products, hiring drivers, massaseurs, rent cars, staying in local hotels/BB/losmens, eating in local restaurants etc etc.
Those are the things of which the Balineses desperately need.
By giving them books, clothes and..bikes ( the latter always make me laugh, sorry I couldn't resist. ), you'll end up making them like beggars someday.
About books... I think the kids have their own school-books guided by Indo government.
Since Mr./Ms Allen is the friend of Ms Helen, a Bali WWF person, I believe they are at the same boat, the same people who have strange behavior.
Well, at least they didn't belong to the people who blow themself at Kuta Square. This is one of the many positive sides of Allen & associates, although I didn't agree with them .
