I actually follow the person who handles my card and do not take my eyes off my card for a second. As I stated in post below...if the swipe machine is behind or under the counter, then I walk around and stand behind them while they process the transaction.
I have heard of it happening to friends in Australia who briefly let the card out of their sight.
