I took a lump sum of cash, after making sure that my villa had a safe, and I took my ATM card, which I was able to use everywhere, and got the best rate of exchange. I changed only 100$ bills and usually only one at a time, just to make the counting easier.
I saw all races and ethnicities during my trip. The Balinese didn't bat an eye. I think they are looking more at if you are making eye contact and if you are smiling (and maybe looking for "transport") than they are at the color of anyones skin.
Filo's lists (from the link he gave) were extremly valuable and I found that I used the advice I printed off his pages more than any I found in a travel guide.
If you do find the time or the desire to travel, consider hiring a local driver to take you to Ubud, or at least for a nice long drive, the "country side" is breathtaking!
