I picked up a book at Denpasar airport as I was waiting for my flight home on my last trip - it's a Periplus book titled "Practical Balinese - a communication guide". Not sure how much I paid for it as, for some reason, I took the price sticker off (D'oh!) but it would have only been around AU$10 or less. The back has US$3.95 printed near the bar code so it's only a cheapie - pocket sized book too.
Has an intro about the different levels of balinese, grammar, situations like restaurants, small talk etc - then has a glossary in everyday balinese and another in high balinese.
Much more difficult to learn than Bahasa Indonesia though.
I also picked up a book at Bintang Supermarket - Making Out in Indonesian. While it does have a section for how to chat someone up (hence the title, lol), it's just a practical guide to informal indonesian as it's spoken between friends. It's more based on street language in Java, but would help with casual use of Indonesian in Bali too.
As for software to use, Rosetta Stone is a pretty good one to use. They just throw you in at the deep end, rather than a gradual introduction. The theory is that kids learn language by seeing things and hearing the words often enough that they associate the word to the object. So it's a visual based thing - lots of photos and indonesian phrases being spoken by native speakers.
There's a few options on Ebay - the one with flash cards is on there too for around $30-ish I think.
