I imagine the emergency option may be in place for people who need a passport urgently and the circumstances are beyond their control. Give it a shot you never know. I know people in Australia who have had simiar problems have had passports issued withing a few days.

The Indonesian consulate wouldn't be able to do anything, except confirm that you need a valid passport with 6 months validity on it the day you enter their country.

I would still endeavor to get the new passport issued by any means possible, just dont be disappointed if your friend cant fly on Friday. You may need to consider rescheduling your departure date.
