This was my first trip overseas without my parents, my parents sent me to Bali for my 21st, best present. I went with my sister who had been a couple of times before and has now been living in Bali for the last 30 years. In July I am coming up for my 35th trip. Do you think I like Bali? I loved it back then and love it now. Back in the 70's I think was the best though. I remember staying in a losmen with no lighting except candles, we had to pump the well when we need water, you never went out of a night time just sit on the verandah of your losmen playing backgammon and guitars with the staff and guests. Night life if you did want to go out was at Doggies, then over the years you had Rum Jungle, Gado Gado, The Sand Bar , then along came Maxi's. Each night club had their party nights, and boy could u do some damage to yourself when these places started, it can get a bit hard riding a push bike after a few drinks and trying to avoid the little Dogs of Bali. I could go on forever, but it is hard for people to imagine what it was like back then unless you experienced it. I try hard to explain it to my kids but they only know Bali as what is has been like for the last 10 years, they can't imagine what it was like surfing out at Ulu's and places like that when there was nobody. I am off on the 21st July with my youngest who is 12, this will be his 5th trip and we are both hanging out to get there. I agree Bali has changed to the max but who cares, our Balinese friends are still the same and treat us the same. Will be different this time as it is only Liam and I going and my husband and older son are staying home and just doing a Queensland and north coast surfing trip in Feb/March.
I bet they will be green on the day we leave, but my husband has not been well for the last year and thinks he should hold off from going to Bali this year. I promis we will bring them home a present.
