I have just returned to Sydney Australia after travelling through Indonesia for 5.5 months and felt completely safe the whole time- Bali is so safe- so many more western travellers that will make you feel safer. And I did things like eat in a warung in Takengon,Aceh at midnight, walk around the main street in Medan North Sumatra at 11.30 pm at night on my way to my room after dinner and chatting to Indonesians.
In Jember East Java, I would walk back to my room ( good 15 minute walk) at 9 pm after visiting the Internet cafe.
Enjoy your time. Travelling alone is so exciting because you only have yourself to worry about and can do so many more spontaneous things. I lived my dream every day for the 5.5 months.
