Yes, it is calculated on air miles, so would cost you more to take an indirect flight.
School hols are always very popular and hard to get, so start early and check frequently.
Frequentflyerfriend may be a good idea, download for a free trial period covering the time you are going to search. Good tool and you can purchase if you feel you may use later.
Qantas has a calculator to work out points required.
Be aware that Qantas are constantly rescheduling and you could very well get changes. It has been a long time since we actually flew as per original details!!! Having said that, we've always made it there and saved heaps. Currently taxes etc etc add up to $330 Per-Dps.
