not just because your battery will kickin but because when using your laptop where the power is unstable, to safeguard against losing your data and information, you should really only use it on battery and recharge after its been shut down. IOW dont use it on AC-DC. So, by only using your laptop on battery you wont lose your info if the power goes crazy but if you happen to be charging up your laptop at the time of a surge then your laptop could end up fried and, from my experience, most surge protectors are not worth the money you pay for them. UPS' are very expensive but they too are affected by surges in power. And I've gotta tell ya there is nothing more annoying than the constant beeping of a UPS particularly a UPS that you paid $300 for last week! I know this to be true because I live and work in an area of Oz where electricity is about as reliable as it is on Bali and where fried computers are very common. As to a voltage stabiliser/regulator, I dont think I've ever heard of them (unless I know them by another name :) ) but would love to hear if they are reliable and if you can get them in Australia.
