I'm also a long time Darwinite and love Darwin for the laid back living. You will find weather same as Bali, still not too hot & humid at this time of year. (I don't even have air con in my house but do have a pool). The shuttle bus maybe at the airport but if not catch a taxi.(probably around $20). I agree with Darwingirl, not a lot open at 4:30am except for people staggering home from nightclubs so you have to be careful in town at that time of the morning. The museum opens around 9am. Good value & it is free. It is few kms from town so use the tourist bus as Darwin girl suggested. The old Fannie Bay Gaol is on the same route after the museum, just up the road. The gaol used to be free but may cost a few dollars now. There are some shops in the city area including Aboriginal art shops. Have a coffee in the mall, relax and watch the world go by. Most of the shops are at Casuarina shopping centre and this is a long way from town. Crocodylus Park next to Berrimah Police Station is interesting & costs around $15. But once again not in town. I would personally go to the museum and hang around the city area as it will bore you to death at the airport, nothing to do at the Darwin airport, very small. You also have to take into account time waiting for the tourist bus or taxi (taxis often not reliable except from airport). Hope this info helps. Enjoy your trip!
Cheers
