Ive had 2 trips to bali on my own ( 2002, 2004) - had a great time! must admit my personal preference is to stay at smaller hotels as I feel people in those tend to be friendlier than the big hotels ( dont flame me guys- first time I stayed at a huge hotel with lots family groups and it wasnt the same)
I must admit I was taken aback a couple of times by a couple of waiters and taxi drivers in kuta who assumed as I was on my own I was looking for male company ( just ignore them). That was the only drawback --- had meals with other hotel guests, booked on a few tours ( WWR, elephant tours) and mixed with others as one found them at different bars- shopping centres - temple dances and so on.
Go for it ! you ll have a great time ( and imagine how flexible you can be with your itinery and time when theres only one of you!)
