I had the same request from our hotel a few weeks ago. As I've heard that you should NEVER send credit card details by email, I faxed them a copy of my card instead (they need both sides) - I also had to send a photocopy of my passport. I then called Mastercard to let them know what I was doing, and that I authorised a one-off payment of X amount. That way, if your card details fall into the wrong hands and get sent elsewhere, you are protected. There are some pretty scary postings about credit card fraud on this website, so it pays to be very careful.
