At first you see Bali as a perfect place with perfect people but then you keep going and learn a lot more understanding of place and people. The holiday comes when you realise that there are no perfect places nor perfect people and that the Balinese (and Indonesians in general) are just like the rest of us, a mix of good and bad and everthing in between. This knocks you sideways for a while but most of us think we'll go back once more and see if we feel differently. If you are lucky you then discover a love and respect for the real people not some idealised concept. Here's the thing, when you get to this point the place and people are even better than when you werw in la la land!!
