I should have added that I did my university degree as a mature age student (at 28 years old) so I had already worked for 10 years before completing my degree and I do see your point about some teachers being totally instutionalised (going straight to from school to uni and back to school again). One of the reasons I am not teaching is because compared to every job I have had (from PR consulant to travel agent to admin worker) teaching involved the most work! I got a bit annoyed when I read your post above and responded to it in a narky manner but can see from this response that you do have your reasons and I can understand what you are saying. But again, I do feel you are generalising - I mean some teachers dress quite casually but certainly not all.
