you are considered a tourist too. I lived there for 13 years, married to an Indonesian, and was treated as a tourist for the whole time. That includes prices going up when they see you coming! It meant that my pembantu (live-in helper) did all the market shopping and I did the supermarket shopping.
But, as said by others, if you have the savings, go for it. Just make sure that you are completely covered by correct visas otherwise you may be kicked out of the country - not pleasant, and the Consulate-General has enough work to do without visiting you in jail!!! :)
My children went to a local Protestant school, but spoke fluent Indonesian. If you want the kids to attend school, rather than by correspondence, then you would have to look at English language schools. Australian International School and Bali International School are very expensive. There is a school, I think called Dyatmika to the east of Sanur that is cheaper, but far more expensive than local schools. I believe there is at least one other in Jimbaran as well.
And make sure that you do take out full insurance. Well worth the expense.
