I tried on several occasions at several different locations to open an account with BCA and BCI and a few others. They wouldn't do it unless you had a KITAS. HOWEVER bank MANDIRI did and still do. They are always very helpfull and most of the forms and ATMS are in either English and Indonesian. Also they understood what a joint bank account was.
As for the 6month thing - not sure. I have had about 100US in the account for the past few years and everytime i return the account is still open - albiet less money each time due to the fees etc for haveing the account.
No problems with Mandiri for me , and if my husband and I every return again we will be using them for all our banking.
