in Jogya organise a bus/accomm package at a local tourist bureau. It takes a day to get there. You stay at a local place o/night and drive to mt bromo in the early a.m. (it's incl in package) Once there hire a horse to take you across the outer crater. The horses know the way in pitch black. Easy on the horse as the sulpher can make their breathing very laboured. I walked it but needed the guide to hold my hand so i wouldn't get lost. :P
In Yogya you can organise to see an evening performance of the Ramayana performed at Prambanan/ go the the sultan's palace/ see some terrific shadow puppet plays/ take batik painting lessons if you decide to stay longer/ take a ride on the back of a scooter to mt merapi, it's not far away/ There's an old unused palace in Yogya but i forget it's name. Worth seeing/ Avoid the zoo -it's bad - or better yet don't avoid and take some food to those animals.
