I never tell taxi drivers that I'm on my own, I tell them that my 'husband' is by the pool drinking. Otherwise I found they often tried to 'pick me up', which I found wearisome the 100th time!

As this is your first time to Bali, look at hotels that have a free shuttle service that will ferry you around after dark so you are not walking around on your own.

I loved staying at the Tegal Sari in Ubud - friendly staff, gorgeous views & reasoanbly priced. Can be hard to get a booking, though. Hotel Tjampuhan is a great hotel in Ubud too, if you don't mind lots of steps, as it is located on the side of a river gorge. Bit more expensive too.

Bali can be as sociable as you want it. Most people are only too happy to chat at the bar or in the pool, so you won't have to worry on that score.

The only thing I don't like much is eating on my own in a restaurant. I usually take a book with me at mealtimes.
