I call them hairy lanterns too and so does my balinese husband. We just bought some back to oz in December as hand luggage. I bought a can of Mortein in Bali and a couple of days before leaving totally sprayed the lantern, leave for a while then tap all the dead things out and keep doing this until you leave. That way when they tap at Sydney airport, no little nasties will come out. My husband actually made on into a letter box
