I take up a bag of $2 coins especially to give away. Sometimes I give a $2 coin to someone who has been very friendly but just doesnt have the right size or colour I want to buy. It's my "giveaway" fund so I dont calculate it as costing me anything (although it obviously does, its part of the holiday budget) It makes me feel better to give something than to walk away seeing the hope disappear from their desperate face. It's not like giving charity because they still have to put some effort into exchanging it for something useful to them. I go to Bali to enjoy myself but at the same time I believe that the unique Bali Customer Focus is a great example of good business practice. I dont have any problem "paying" for this service that always comes with a smile. When the smile is better than the product and I dont want to buy ...I'm still happy to "pay" for the smile. I dont give to beggars (well, never say never but as a general rule) but I will happily help someone in need. Most people can see the difference.
