Hi Cinta,
You obviously learnt one word of Bahasa Indonesia on your last trip - cinta is one of the first I learnt too!
I have a few friends from Java of around the same age as your friend and they all speak Bahasa Indonesia. They speak Javanese to each other, but different dialects and a lot of slang is used, so the best thing for you to learn to communicate with your friend is Bahasa Indonesia - he will definitely understand that as it is his universal language in Indo, and it is also the most language for you to learn as it means you will be able to communicate with people from Java, Bali, Sumatra, Kalimantan... everywhere basically.
Indonesians usually really appreciate any attempts to speak their language (my friends all really helped, teaching me all kinds of useful - and no so useful! - words) so I'm sure your friend from Java will be pleased even if you only pick up a bit of the language.
