where to stay on Bali? Please advise

I am going to Bali April/May. Which part of Bali is the best place to stay to have an access to a nice, sandy beach (not crowded), to have good snorkeling? We would treat it as a base for further exploring of the island?
I have never been there before so any advice is appreciated?
