I can't help wondering in life why so many people tend to see something happening, don't stop it at the time, then complain bitterly afterwards. I am not accusing you of this, just making an observation.
I think that it's not so much a matter of how Bali works, as so much, as this is the way the developing world works. I doubt very much that we can have any appreciation of just how hard daily life must be to peole who're constantly on the edge. It also puzzles me how few think to save for those 'rainy days'.
I think that whenever you're in Bali you need to be watching out for yourself, and to be aware of the scams. Locals do and are constantly, as most scams are directed at them, such as the SMS that asks for all your bank details so they can give you a zillion rupiah! Yeah right!
