It's always going to be the question that has so many differing opinions because most of the people answering are very different in themselves. But, this is the general feel I get:
If you like the beach, like to party, like the hustle and bustle and love a cheap feed, stay in Kuta/Legian.
If you prefer something more quiet, more refined eating establishments, more art, no beach, very little partying and good lush scenery, go to Ubud.
Sanur appears to be something between with beach, eating, less hustle and bustle.
Nusa Dua is basically an area purpose built for 5 star hotels and has no other reason for being there. If you love 5-star hotels and all that they have to offer, you could well do spend a week in your hotel without exiting and still have a good time. However, for most people, this will not be ideal.
For me, I usually choose to stay in Kuta for a few days to get some essential shopping out of the way, visit a couple of good restaurants and then head somewhere else. The frenetic pace of the place I find difficult to cope with after a while.
