It's called skimmimg, where they take your card out the back or under the counter and copy your information from the magmetic strip. They will often tell you they need to go into the next room to call Visa and get authorisation. They then make copies of your card and flog them to criminals who then go on a spending spree. Don't let your card out of your site.
Only phone or mail order purchases can be made from the numbers copied from the carbon copy. There is no point scratching out numbers on the cabon copies because the vendor always keeps the original and he can copy your number from it if he wants to.
