There's a proposal for Indonesia to introduce a law requiring foreign men who are marrying Indonesian women to deposit US$50,000 with the Indonesian government.
The money still belongs to the couple... they just can't use it. I think it's supposed to be to take care of the woman and any children in the event of a divorce.
Why the amount is more than the average lifetime earnings of an Indonesian is anyone's guess. Too bad if the guy is from an equally struggling country. Or even an average dude from a wealthy country.
By the time I saved up AU$65,000 to put down a deposit on a wife, she'd be too damn old and I'd have to trade her in for a new one.
Just what Indonesia needs... a bunch more single mothers.
