I think it's a mistake to assume that because they were from a small village, didn't go to high school, are poor in comparison to ourselves, then they must be desperate and easily manipulated into blowing up people.
The Bali bombers may be intelligent human beings who were not manipulated or feeling particularly desperate at all.
