As quiet some years ago now we travelled with my father in law and his companion. The companion had a very soft heart and was also confused as she was bombarded by beggers. The beggers would follow her into each shop and wait for her to come out. Sure enough she would give them some money. We would tell her that she had already given to them. Later we were in Melasti Street walking around the back of the market stall and come across a house. We could not believe our eyes. There was about 10 or more beggers counting their money etc. We asked some locals and asked about the children they had and were told they were not even their kids. "It was a business".
I do however believe there are people that are genuine. We offer them food and my husband always has a stash of sweets/lollies to give the kids.
