I also have been gut-wrenched as you have described. But I have also been asking myself if I don't go to Bali because of terrorists where do I go? If I rule out all the places that have been hit by terrorists in the last few years that reduces the number of countries I visit by more than a handful. Then if I rule out all the places terrorists COULD PERHAPS be active, that takes another big chunk out of the picture. Somehow the thought of holidaying in Antarctica or some tiny village in the depths of the Amazonian rainforests does not appeal. Now, if I go to places that are theoretically safe, I also have to hope I do not get a fatal disease, or get bitten by something poisonous, or there is a random train/bus/boat/plane accident/tsunami/avalanche, or even a random postal worker with a gun or two. And I suppose I have to run the risk of a gondola leaving the wires with me in it or under it. Sheesh...maybe I had better stay inside my house. But then I run the risk of lightning strikes/earthquakes/landslides/electrical fires or flooding. When I was in Bali the staff at one of the restaurants wore a t-shirt that read "A life lived in fear is a life half-lived" and that is how I feel.
I believe for each there is a personal choice to make, but you wondered why some make some choices, and so I am just sharing mine.
