sim help ???

recieved a proXL sim card forwarded to me by nicky.
???
I believed that if a sim card other than the one you are using works then your phone is unlocked. Tried this and seemed OK.ie vigin in optus prepaid
However when I put sim card from Nicky in it says SIM CARD REJECTED.
i'M CONFUSED. Could it be because not in Bali or do I perhaps still need to get phone unlocked. Phone is an Old one not used now but was previously a prepaid phone of my daughters
