HELP need to know...

when the airlines say they will refund your money is this instantaneous that they give you the refund or will it take forever to receive???
Still trying to make our minds up wether to leave on the 18th Oct ..or not we want to go but kids are dead against us going.
So this is why I need to know cos I have my holidays booked from work and I need to go SOMEWHERE if not there...
