of your residency or permission to stay in Australia (ie, Australian passport, or residency visa in foreign passport), and proof of funds, ie, current bank statement. Don't send over an amount of money for them to put into their own accounts as the government prefers to see regular deposits and withdrawals.
Don't buy a ticket, only book one and get them to bring the computer printout of the booking to the Consulate-General.
They also need to provide incentive to return. A letter from you saying that you will make sure they will get on the plane is not deemed sufficient proof. Better proof would be:
1. marriage certificate;
2. family card showing dependents;
3. letter from employer stating that they have holidays and a job on their return;
4. letter from school saying that they are enrolled for a particular date;
etc.
Mic is right - a one to three month visa is a better and more "grantable" period of time. An itinerary is a great idea! Even saying that you are travelling together on a holiday and seeing various places elsewhere in Australia.
Don't forget that the application is not assessing you, but the applicant.
