I owe a big apology to Mr Ken who is apparently also Balimumma. (I don't quite know why or how that works.)
It turns out that Bata shoes, while still foreign-owned (so not ideal), have put in place adequate working conditions and run their own factory in Jakarta (rather than getting other unregulated factory owners to run it). They pay wages well above minimum wage and all other conditions are pretty good. The shoes they make in Indonesia are only sold in Indonesia and the prices they charge are affordable to Indonesians (70-100,000Rp).
I discovered this while doing some research on an amazing woman called Dita Sari. She is an Indonesian union leader who was jailed for four years for leading a strike against unfair conditions in textile factories. She won a Reebok Human Rights Award worth US$50,000 (approximately 100 years wages if you're working for Reebok in Indonesia) and rejected it because Reebok are a pack of assssssholes.
Read a little more here, and then if you're interested have a google for more info:

I think if Dita can stand to spend four years in jail and reject more than a lifetime's wages in order to uphold her own ethics and support her fellow workers, then all of us can try a little harder when selecting our footwear.
