I dont know what other think, but I believe after 911 you have fat chance of aking them as carry on luggage. There should be no problem of putting them in you normal luggage which goes in the hold. I would declare them when checking in as sometimes they are held /secured by the crew in the plane if they allow you to take them as carry on. In perth my wife had a small nail set (for finger nails etc) and had to give get rid of it as they wouldnt let her enter the departure area, and her bags were already checked in.
