Just get a sim card when you get there. I got one from Kuta Square outside Matahari. Think it cost Rp50,000 and I topped it up with another Rp50,000 credit. SMS to australia cost me Rp600 each (about 8c each) and all I had to do was SMS each of my family members and they had my new number to get in touch with me. Cost of SMS for them was no different than if I used my home number.
I used it to call mum on her birthday. We spoke for about 10min and I think it only cost about Rp80,000 - which was the same as I paid for a 5 min call from the hotel when I first arrived.
