about working out what you want!! We did the same in reverse. After staying more up market and at a time when we were planning retirement but still wanted plenty of trips to Bali we did the analalising what we actually want thing. We realised we didn't use a lot of things that were on offer in a 4*. We have now switched to smaller hotels and just love them. Wish we'd done it years ago. I'm talking around 20 rooms size.
Our requirements are. Clean room. Comfortable bed. Fridge (doesn't have to be stocked). T.V. for my other half. (Doesn't matter about movie channels take portable DVD player for him). Plumbing that more or less works> have put a rubbish bin under the basin if it leaks without worrying. Also have been known to chuck a bin full of water down a reluctant loo without worrying. Clean pool that is big enough to swim up and down in. Food and drink we can actually afford to consume if we happen to feel like it. Oh and functional quietish air con. in a location we like and find interesting.
I love the personal touch in the little hotels and all the little quirks you find.
Isn't it great though, that having done the same exercise and come to exactly opposite conclusions we can both find exactly what we want in Bali?
