First time flyers and nervous wrecks ,have no fear of flying, i caught a 30 odd year pilot on talk back radio yesty (Perth)on plane safety, He was using 747 boeing as an EG.If the 4 engines shut down at 40,000 feet which is the approx normal height for levelling off,(hopefully not in the vicinity of any others )the plane will not just fall out of the sky, they have the capacity to glide yes glide for approx 170 nautical miles, and at the same time desending to an altitude of 27,000 feet where the air mixture for reignition of fuel to the engines is compatable for a restart(thats if there is fuel in the aircraft)Next time you fly you will notice the sound of the engines change pitch when you are about 120 miles out ,they put the engines back to idle and glide in while desending,He also stated that seating forward of the wings are more quieter than backward of them, hence why business and first class are up the front of the plane. Also all pilots have to use a simulator every 6 months to perform the safety checks on engine stalls among other things.Turbulence is not a problem as long as the pilots are awake and seek better altitude either up or down, just like when you drive a car on bumpy surfaces you look for better road.Hope this helps a few pill poppers before flying,Nervous or not we still jump aboard one to get to the isle of smiles so just relax, enjoy roll on SEPT. I'M IN cheers all
