A question about Arak

I have heard about Arak and noticed cocktails made with it.
But what exactly is it made from?
I am normally a white rum person, can arak be a substitute for it in cocktails?
We are in a villa, so able to make our own cocktails and after our duty free runs out, just wondering if worth buying a bottle of arak to use or is the hangover any worse????
