My husband contracted Malaria from Bali (we stayed in Legian and he surfed Canggu, Uluwatu, Bingin and Kuta) in 1999. He started getting symptoms in the September, very badly and we had returned from Bali in the July, so it took about 2 months to rear it's ugly head. He was extremely sick with very very high fevers and sweats and couldn't eat, lost a lot of weight, couldn't stand up or sit down, he basically couldn't move from his bed. He was vomiting and fainting too. The doctor we went to picked it up very quickly and he was sent to hospital immediately... He was very sick for about 3 months with it... and we were getting married that same December!!! It was not a pleasant thing for him to have to go through and it wasn't a pleasant thing to have to watch him go through. He was extremely ill. He now has it for 'life' and yes, it can start up all over again - he has already had one similar episode, but they ruled out the Malaria rearing up again.
Hopefully it is just some kind of fever and not Malaria, if the doctor's do discover Malaria be assured that they will move very fast on it, especially if it is one of the more fatal strains.
Just a word of warning to anyone that thinks there isn't Malaria around - our doctor has told us that if you happen to get the number one strain of Malaria, it can kill you. Please don't get me wrong here, I am not saying that your son has that, I am just telling anyone who reads this that this is what we were told from our doctor - to be very very careful!
Let us know how you go with your son and if you need any info or anything just send us an email if you like.
Good Luck.
