Last year we did as you proposed to Queensland. I travelled with my daughter on frequent flyer seats. My husband travelled with our then two year old son on Virgin. The planes arrived within five minutes of each other. THis saved us $800. It was difficult because the young one does not handle change well. Added to this he lost his bear and the plane was delayed for ninety minutes. It was not a success from this point of view but it was a lot of money to save and paid for much of our accommodation. Our neightbours are doing the same in a few weeks. The wife is taking the three kids to Hong Kong and hubby is dropping off at the airport and leaving later. He also returns earlier and picks them up at the airport. While not ideal, all of us looked at the advantages and they outweighed the disadvantages. I would save $1000 and put up with the disadvantages.
