I got married april 4th of 04 and had my honeymoon in Bali. I'm also from the US (Minnesota). My wife and I stayed in Bangkok for 10 days and in Bali for 20. Everytime we talk about the trip it starts out that Bangkok was neat, but we wish we would have gone the entire time in Bali. The flight is really not as bad as you would think. The asain airlines are soo much better than the domestic ones in the US. They showed really recent movies, had pretty good food, and more leg room than I am used to (I'm a fairly big guy).
As far as the activities go, thier is really anything you could ever want to do. Four wheeling in the mountains and streams. Horse back rideing on the beach and through little towns. Visit Beautiful temples. White water rafting. Hike up a volcano. Can't leave out partying with Aussie's (man can they tear it up).
Bali is really safe. Their crime is way lower than it is here in the states. I have problems adjusting to different time zones so I spent a few nights walking the beaches and Kuta. Felt safer than my own neighborhood. Just due yourself a favor and stay away from the drugs. It's not a huge drug problem over thier, but they are around. Bangkok on the other hand...... only if your street wise.
As far as anyhting else you should be aware of, here we go. People in Bali are not like people in the states. We need to leave our tempers and bring patience. They are very genuine, good people. They are also in a bad economic place. Understand that the guy trying to sell you something, that keeps asking, has a family to feed and is trying desperaitly to do soo.
Bali is not Cancun. Even though most people due understand english, it's not another America in Mexico. One of my favorite things about Bali is that. It really helps to see where you are comming from when you have something else to compare it too.
I love the food in Bali. Everithing is soo fresh and healthy. It's hard to explain, but it's almost like the hybird food over here is missing something, but their's got it. I grew up working on farms, so that is a strange thing for me to say. You'll understand when you get thier.
I hope it helps you out hearing an opinion from our side of the world. I'm pretty well traveled, and Bali is by far my favorite place. We are going back to celibrate our one year in 10 days. If thier is anything else I can help ya out with, just let me know.
