You should have no problems.
Yes there is some things you could be made aware of before you go, yet don't get caught up in too much info .. can then start to look all too hard.
We have a good "fun-do-see" list of things you can do in Bali. If you would like a copy of it, just drop us an e-mail and we will send it to you. Just remember the remove the _noSpam_ bit at the front.
As for Bangkok or Hongkong .... well they are almost trips of there own. As for shopping, they have the edge as far as electrical items, yet all 3 are good for cheap cloths, bags, leather, watches etc ....
From the US, you would be overshooting Bali just a little bit if you went to Bangkok, so if you do want a stop, maybe Hongkong, then it's just straight down to Bali.
