I would think the accused in any case in the World ought to be fully advised of the range of penalties/sentences which may apply if they are found guilty. To do otherwise would be grossly unfair, misleading and cruel. Remember, there is a full range of lesser penalties - the fact that the prosecution has sought one does not necessarily mean it WILL apply. Unfortunately, there are places where this is not done and "justice" is meted out at the whim of the "judge", without even a nod to the process of a trial. Irrespective of our opinions (and WE are not in full possession of all of the FACTS) in a particular case, I think we need to keep Mitch's points in mind.
At the risk of incurring a flame - I don't think invective against the judicial system we are hoping will hand down a judgement in favour of a particular accused BEFORE THE VERDICT IS ANNOUNCED is helpful. Just my opinion, of course. I think it is likely that a lot of diplomatic lobbying is going on at the highest levels and it is possible that both sides are looking for a way out of this tragic situation which will be consistent with the Indonesians' stance on drug import/export and clemency. Again, just my opinion and hopes.
